Van Gogh admired how Japanese transformed the word around then in their art. His stay in Provence, he saw himself as a monk, living an ascetic life,  devoted to his art.

And then the Almond blossoms

While Van Gogh painted from reality, Gaughin painted from imagination ( Vangogh was not actually painting sunflowers then)
